Greenkeepers news

Every week day at 5.45.am you can find all the greenkeepers crowded together under the heat lamp in the main storage barn discussing the day's duties, the weather forecast, the best time or day to do certain maintenance jobs, and on the odd occasion Strictly or Sherlock! It is a good time to get everyone's input into the day, do the fairways need cutting, shall we change holes and to what position, shall we cut greens, shall we cut tees, who is raking bunkers and more importantly what will the weather be like! Everything we do has to fit around the weather in this country especially at this time of year, rain brings flooding, clear skies and there could be a frost, warm and wet weather could bring diseases, and then the dreaded snow which can bring all sorts of problems if it stays around too long.

I have always loved the British seasons because they bring us variety and appreciation of our countryside and the challenge of the next change of season. I like it that long cold winters turn into green shoots of spring which in turn will become the balmy days of high summer and then just as we are all getting used to the outside life, autumn rears its head and before long we start all over again. After a few weeks of high temperatures we now have had a few centimetres of snow to test us, freezing rain and black ice and deep frozen greens and now relentless rain for two days, yet we are open and the course shut itself for just one day, a testament to the versatility and robustness of the course and winter is not over by a long shot yet.

The challenges of preparing a course and playing under these conditions is what makes life interesting.
